Whitsunday Sailing - Cruising the Great Barrier Reef
Magnificent tropical islands, white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, sheltered coves plus idyllic calm water sailing and cruising. Whatever your preference, be it the slap of sail and creak of timber, the adrenalin surge on an ocean racer or the pleasures of luxury cruising, one of the following Barefoot Sailing vessels will give you a voyage of discovery.
Nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays share the same idyllic climate as the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Tahiti. The scenery is spectacular, the marine life is teeming with vivid colors and magnificent corals are waiting to be explored. The fringing coral reefs, tropical rainforests, pristine beaches and crystal clear waters, largely untouched by man, make this one of the most beautiful sailing and cruising destinations in the world.
World Heritage listed, the Whitsundays form part of the world's largest National Park. Comprising some 74 islands the Whitsunday Group is primarily uninhabited. However if you pine for civilization there is always one of the internationally renowned island resorts (Hayman Island & Hamilton Island) from which to choose.
The warm aquamarine waters range between 20 and 25 deg.C (68 - 78 deg.F) year round. Summers (Jan-Apr) are warm with frequent rain showers. Winters (June-Aug), considered perfect by many, are warm by day and cool by night.
Getting To
the Whitsundays: Domestic airlines have daily flights
into Proserpine and Hamilton Island from all major cities
on the East Coast of Australia. It takes about 45 minutes
by bus or taxi from Proserpine airport to Airlie Beach and
Shute Harbour. From Hamilton Island there are water taxis,
ferries (taking about 1 hour) and air taxi services (10
minutes) to Shute Harbour.
