Self-drive 6 day/5 nights – Tasmania Highlights

Arrive Launceston. Pick up rental car at the airport. Self drive 10 miles to your hotel.
Drive 125 miles through pastoral lands to Lake St. Clair National Park, a mountainous area of alpine moorlands, lakes and wide variety of fauna and flora. Stay Cradle Mountain Lodge.
At leisure. Explore the magnificent wilderness area and animal life.
Less than 100 miles away is the historic port township of Strahan, once the center of the Western Tasmania timber industry.
Cruise on the beautiful Gordon River, with its deep, clear waters, and timber-clad shoreline. After your cruise, self drive 200 miles as you follow the course of the Derwent River to Hobart, Tasmania’s State Capital. Evening at leisure to enjoy dinner in one of the many waterfront cafes.
Depart Hobart. We recommend you visit historic Port Arthur before returning your rental car to Hobart Airport.
Extend your vacation another 2-3 nights to stay in the pristine coastal peninsula at Freycinet National Park overlooking Great Oyster & Wineglass Bays .

Cradle Mountain Lodge – Tasmania (Located 2 hours west of Launceston)

The Central Highlands of Tasmania is an alpine wilderness of forests, mountains, and lakes protected by Cradle Mountain/Lake St. Clair National Park. Miles of hiking trails explore the park which contains dark mossy rain forests and glacial tarns, Alpine meadows and tumbling rivers. The lodge offers a daily activities program including guided nature walks, canoeing, horse riding, and other activities. Regular visitors to the lodge environs include wallabies, possums, wombats and the Tasmanian Devil, plus an assortment of native forest birds. From here you have an opportunity to explore the superb natural beauty of this unique island state.

Want to see a Tasmanian devil? A platypus? Animal nurseries? Expert wildlife rehabilitation? We recommend you visit Trowunna Wildlife Park a family wildlife park at Mole Creek not far from Cradle Mountain.  It offers special and intimate encounters with native animals, you can get up close and hand-feed the free-ranging kangaroos and wallabies. Or you can take an interactive guided tour and see Tasmanian devils being hand-fed, pat a koala, hold a baby wombat, and learn from informed guides about these unique marsupials.  You can see more than 35 species of birds and animals, situated on more than 15 hectares (38 acres) of natural bushland.
