Description

Ha’apai Islands

The island of Foa is one of the gemstones in the bracelet of beautiful atolls called Ha’apai, Tonga’s central group of islands. Ha’apai was home to Tonga’s traditional monarchs, the Tui’Tonga, who ruled the islands for a thousand years, and on Foa a German couple have built a holiday resort fit for a king or queen.

There are daily, 45 minute flights from Nuku’alofa. Nowhere so easily accessible could be so further removed from the modern day world of macro-tourism. Little has changed over the past century. Life moves at a “go slow” pace and one relaxed day just seems to flow into another. Ha’apai is a retreat – no pollution, no traffic, no discos, no hassles, no crowds, no hurries or headaches. Add one of the gentlest of climates and these islands are nothing short of being perfect.

Most of the 50 islands are low lying small coral atolls with exception the volcanic islands of Tofua and Kao to the West. Lifuka and Foa are linked by a causeway and are the two largest. Pangai, on Lifuka is the administrative center.
